When I decided to #OwnThose5Days

“Mera aj birthday hai”, I would say sorrowfully and immediately my friends would nod with understanding. Periods meant a number of things for me:
I could not perform arti or go to the temple (which would make me happy because it was not my favourite thing to do)
No wearing white clothes for Friday gym class (which meant it was apparent to the entire school that I had my periods)
If I visited my friend’s strict household, I had to inform the aunty that I had “it” and would have to sit on the floor in a separate room as we both would try and finish the homework.
I had to go and change at least thrice in a day which meant taking permission from the stirct Maths teacher to use the washroom as the class sniggered.
I could obviously not eat my beloved pickle, murabba, papaya, mango or anything spicy because it would generate heat in my body
I could not cycle, run, skip or play cricket and would be sidelined as the umpire. In our colony whenever a girl wanted to become the umpire, the boys would know that she had a “problem” and would stay away from her.

There were times when I would sincerely pray to God to convert me into a boy so that I did not have to go throug the pain or the humiliation on those 5 days. Well, he never took me seriously enough to grant my wish and I was stuck being a sullen teenager for quite some time.
I started becoming a little more mature when I hit 20 and took a Masters in Social Work course where I realized that there are women all across India who survive their periods without a sanitary napkin. If these ladies could be unstoppable then why not me?

I decided to #OwnThose5Days of the month with the New Whisper Ultra offers five times more protection than any ordinary pad. I wanted to bring changes in the lives of these women and I became unstoppable afterI understood that periods were nothing. I had a good friend in the New Whisper Ultra that ensured that I was comfortable month after month so that I could do my job with confidence.

The New Whisper Ultra had 1000 suctions holes that gave
•   More absorption for long hours
•   Better dryness for clean feeling
•   Faster absorption for sudden heavy flows
•   Better comfort with soft top sheet
•   Better odor lock

I could travel in rural areas extensively without worries because the New Whisper Ultra lasted me for 6 hours easily. The pad controlled odour, ensured that I was comfortable in bumpy rides in autorickshaws and also gave me a clean feeling throughout the day. I am unstoppable now. Are you? I am glad that your fem products work for you but its sad about cultural shaming of women having periods so simple and natural course of life!! I am glad that there Women for Women International, United Nations programs for woman, and others change health and cultural perspectives of women every where!

I don't know about the culture or the belief, but seriously you have to sit on the floor in a separate room? Tell me, I want to know more why you should do that. 🙂

Everybody deserves to own those 5 days. We shouldn't be hindered just because of that. A fantastic write up. Thanks Khushboo.

About Munni of all Trades

We remember the day seven years back when were travelling in a Mumbai local trying hard to come up with a name for our blog when struck us; Khushboo was always called a Jack of all Trades. The name stuck (with a slight modification, of course) and Munni was born. Six years, over 100 collaborations, lakhs of readers and several awards later; our love for blogging continues to grow. We continue to write on an eclectic range of topics from the funniest autorickshaw signs that we have spotted in Mumbai to how to bathe an elephant. We are true blue Munni of all Trades and we hope to continue on this joyride with our fellow Munnis and Munnas. Read More
