Nithya and me

The first time I saw her; her hair was flying all over the place and she was biting her lips nervously as she tried to figure out the correct classroom. I gave her once over and thought, “Another South Indian behenji” and I resolved to steer clear of her.

But she had the magnetic pull, a charm that somehow made me gravitate towards her and we were becoming friends. She could tolerate my silly riddles like, “How do you make a soup of gold” and not attempt to strangle me to death. (Psst…the answer is use 14 carrots… karats…carrots, got it?) as I would happily polish off her idlis and sambhar that her mom make so that she would not get yelled at. She could laugh at my PJ’s and I could tickle her to death if she was ever sad.

I used to and still photograph terribly but she would keep pulling me into the frame. I tried various ruses to get out of it, but they failed.
This is my look sad ruse

This is my, “I won’t look at the camera” ruse

 Eventually I gave up and…
We have had many adventures together. Like shooting for a documentary in the middle of rainy day, trying to distract a police officer while the other one would sneakily click photographs of a temple where photography, you guessed it, was not permitted and eating 50 pani puris each and then being sick for two whole days.
She was my Secret Santa Spy in college, it was her job to ensure that my Santa did not forget me. She once threatened a guy who forgot to get me presents for Christmas so much so that the next day, he came in bearing all of my favourite things!
We rarely chatted with each other on the phone keeping our mobile balances always in the green. We preferred to hang out in coffee shops when we had money or crash into my house or hers for food when we were broke.
I got into the habit of picking and dropping her off to Sion station which was about 15 minutes from college and my dearest mom started thinking that I have acquired a boyfriend!
Then after our final year of college, things changed. I got admission in a college that was 10 hours from Mumbai and she like a proper grown up started working full time. Staying in touch was difficult, and I thought that even we would eventually lose contact. But when I first returned to Mumbai from college, she was already sitting at my house grinning.
Rest was history. I ignored everyone and both of us went around trying out  new places in Mumbai. One of amongst them was Starbucks! While I wanted to be one of the people who would dance up and down when they entered Starbucks on the first day of its opening in Mumbai, I was stuck in Tuljapur. So, in order to make my experience special, she decided that we are going to dance even though Starbucks had opened months ago. A few exceptionally posh customers did raise their eyebrows at two seemingly grown up girls get high on a cup of coffee, others just smiled.
So do Good Things Happen When We Get Together? Absolutely, yes. And that is why; I am going to take this opportunity, to ask Nithya to….

I know her answer would be to grab her purse and say, let’s go shop for the wedding dress. 😀
Starbucks has introduced a microsite, www.meetmeatstarbucks.in that engages with customers to come forth and tell their interesting ‘#HowWeMet’ stories. This was mine, I would love to know your #HowWeMet story too! 🙂

Nice story about your friendship. (What is a behenji?) The Marriage proposal ending was startling! I did not expect it.

The part where you came back to mumbai only to find her already sitting at your place grinning moved me. It is hard to get such friends. And the marriage proposal thing was just too darn cute..

True friendships are those that though you don't get together most of the time or even talk to each other as often as before, they still remain true to you. Those kind of friends are hard to find. Lucky you found yours. 🙂

Ok, I just read it now and surprised that you kept note of all the little things we did together (I did not know you thought of me as a behenji in the beginning :P) Nobody has ever made me so famous or promoted me on their blog, this is super special for me. And yes we will go shopping for the wedding gown (PS. We are not lesbians) Love you kickass, super enthusiastic woman who always held my back. This lady shares a huge chunk in me now doing comparatively better in life from what I was. Thanks for the best Christmas present ever!

  • ‘Gillu' by Mahasweta Devi was my favourite story as a child. It was about a mischievous squirrel that the author had nursed back to health who became her best friend. I wanted a 'Gillu' for myself and during summers, I would spend hours outdoors observing the other 'Gillus' on the trees and trying to befriend them.

It was a simple story that sparked my imagination and made me fall in love with reading and nature.
Which is your favourite childhood story?

Did you know that despite being well educated, many of us are still not financially literate? It is surprising that even today people don't plan ahead for their future and are unaware of how they can plan their finances.
Financial Literacy is important for all of us. The @cfa_society_india along with @nsdlgst has taken up a unique initiative, a 14-day bicycle tour, to promote it.
Swipe to see photos from their event in Mumbai today where they addressed the need of taking care of our #WealthKiHealth.

  • #Thanjavur is home to small bronze foundries where each sculptures and figurines are handcrafted by craftsmen who have learned the artform their forefathers.

To begin with, all the measurements of a deity are made with strands of coconut leaves. The next step is to create a wax model and mould it with metal file to shape the details.

After cooling for over 2 hours, the wax model is wrapped in a clay model and left to dry in the sun for a few days. Once the mould is dry, it is heated in a furnace for a few hours till the wax completely melts. The hollow clay form is filled with molten bronze to create the figurine.
It is then kept in a stack of hay to harden and finally, the mould is chipped away little by little for the sculpture to emerge.
Each sculpture or figurine can take up to 8 to 10 days to create and is handcrafted with love and care.
Visiting a #BronzeFoundry was one of the highlights of my trip with @tamilnadutourism and @ttm.online
