My taste buds are in an overdrive and they are invoking the memories of some of the best Gujju thalis that I’ve had in Mumbai! Let’s have a look at my top three.
Maharaja Bhog- Premium Veg Thali
With a 30 day rotating menu loaded with delicacies, the Maharaja Bhog Thali is perfect for those on the lookout for a premium Gujarati restaurant in Mumbai. The minute you sit down, you are greeted with a welcome drink, a special herb smoked buttermilk and then the insistent waiters ensure that you try everything on the menu and take second and third helpings, too. The best part? The desserts are unlimited, too. Be on the lookout for days they serve their sublime kala jamun and chikoo halwa. And yes, don’t forget to go on an empty stomach if you want to sample everything.
Shree Thakker Bhojnalaya
After walking through the bylanes of Kalbadevi, you will be greeted with a waft of cool air and a welcoming smile the minute you enter this Bhojnalaya. Even before you sit down, a waiter would appear magically and will start serving you a refreshing drink to quench your thirst. After that, all you have to do is wait for a few seconds for people to start serving you. They won’t take no for an answer even if you beg and plead that your stomach is full. After all, they want you to try out all their wonderful delicacies. Home style preparation without too much oil, a khichdi that is wholesome and yet so delicious and a wide variety of farsan, vegetables, dals and chappatis…at the end of your meal you wouldn’t be able to move an inch. Truly, one of the best Gujarati thalis in Mumbai.
Friends Union Joshi Club
If you are the lookout for a light meal that will remind you of your mom’s cooking, then you should definitely visit Friends Union Joshi Club. It offers 4 vegetables, dal, farsan, feather light phulkas, bhakris, a salad and a sweet dish. While it may not have a huge variety like other places, it definitely makes up in the flavours department. At the end of the meal you will be satisfied at eating healthy yet you will be too full to wash down your meal with some water or chaas.
This is hands down one of the best places to try out Gujarati Cuisine in Mumbai.
I had great fun writing about my favourite restaurants. Do you think I should be adding more to this list? Let me know in the comments below. J
