Considered to be an inauspicious in India, black was one colour I was never allowed to wear in my childhood. However, my dadi would definitely apply black kajal to ward evil away. So was black a powerful colour that could defeat the evil or was it a bad colour, on which Gods frowned upon. I always had this question in my mind, but whenever I tried to ask this to any adult, they would just shush me, saying that I should not interfere in religious matters. The day I got my first job all hell broke lose. You see, I bought an all black wardrobe and I fell in love with myself. Black looked good on me. Scratch that! It made me look gorgeous and it gave me an air of mystery. Nobody could figure out why I chose to wear black everyday. My grandma, however, hated it. One day, she asked me angrily, “Why do you buy so many black things. Give me one reason?”
I could give her a million reasons but then I chose to give her these five.
Black is the colour of warmth
One of the most interesting facts that I had ever heard as a child was that the colour black absorbs nearly 99% of heat and that makes it the warmest colour of all.
And that is why; grandma, I own a black sweatshirt. Simple and stylish, it goes with everything, it makes me look slimmer and it protects me from the harsh winters.
Black is the colour of light
Do you think that one would ever appreciate light, if there was no darkness.? Black ensures that we know the importance of light, grandma. Black also helps me relive my memories. You don’t understand this? Well, without darkness, how could you ever get your photographs printed? That is why; I own a black camera, which the until ambassador of the colour black!
Black is the colour of Seduction
Don’t look so shocked Grandma. I am a young woman and I love to dress up well, not for others, but for my own happiness. Black stilettos make me look graceful and tall. They make me look well proportioned and confident and they are the ultimate symbol of style.
Black is the colour of Elegance
Instead of owning boring vanilla diamonds, I plan to own the symbol of elegance and luxury; a black diamond. A diamond that is not gifted to me by a guy but I diamond that I buy for myself. It will not only make me stand apart from the crowd, but it will reflect what I truly am, the blackest sheep of our family. True words right?
Black is power
Henry Ford once remarked, “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black.” Now, do you see why black is such a powerful colour?
Black symbolizes an amalgamation of all colours in the universe. Do you know that a rainbow originates from black. With black, I am all powerful, I have passion of red, the serenity of green, the liveliness of blue, the warmth of yellow and the peace of white. What else do I need in my life? And that is why; I own a black pantsuit.
Now you know grand mom, why I own only black? 🙂
